I came into this movie having a loose idea of the concept of The Backrooms but wasn't really read up on any of the lore, the creepypasta, and have not played any of the games. With all these considerations I have slightly mixed feelings because I felt like I finished the movie still not really coming away with anything that tangible despite them giving a bunch of vague descriptions throughout the entire movie.
On one hand, I did enjoy that this was a more psychological movie, but on the other I feel like this movie didn't really stir ANY type of emotion in me as I was watching, good or bad. The only moment that really stood out to me was the part where Chiwetel's character was trying to get the woman to eat the fake clones, but I think aside from that I didn't really feel like this film entirely figured out a genre it wanted to follow. It reminded me slightly of a found footage version of Annihilation, but I also think it didn't even lean into the found footage part enough. It would be hard to do an entire found footage movie but they just dropped that aspect entirely after a while, which also made the gap between Chiwetel's descent to madness just feel very open ended in a not so compelling way, even though he is a great actor.
There's something to be said about how there weren't any real "enemies" in the movie besides the people themselves, but I think I was just thoroughly whelmed by this movie.
