PSYЯEN, is one of the cult classic Shonuen Jump series that never really took off or got an anime adaptation (until now WAHOO), and has almost superceded it's cult and underated status amongst "those who know ball" manga readers. This was another series I really enjoyed reading while growing up, and along with Mx0 was one of those series that it was hard to find someone to talk with who knew what the heck I was even referring to and I'm so happy that it got it's chance to reach a wider audience after almost 20 years.
What I think is so unique about Psyren are its premise and its power systems. While its mystery core was more unusual compared to its contemporaries at the time in SJ, one could argue that its power system wasn't that far out, but what I really enjoy about the way that the use of Psychic powers were implemented in this series was how hyper-specific the applications of powers, especially Yoshina Ageha's were, to the point where he essentially was forced to create programs or sub-routines to channel his abilities in a productive and controllable output. It has a very Nen like feeling to it, and the ways that the main character gets around the dangers of using his abilities is quite creative.
However, the mystery aspect of this series that I mentioned earlier also kind of becomes its downfall as the mystery is resolved far too early into the run of the series and it essentially just becomes a standard battle Shounen series, which I think is really to its loss and detriment, as it lost a very key aspect of what made it stand out to fans even while sharing a magazine with the Big 3. The amount of actual plot points between the time where the mystery is, not even really solved they kind of just give you the answer in a bit of an unsatisfying way, and to the final events of the story is pretty relatively short, and by the time it really starts to get rolling, it kind of feels like it already ended. It's hard to say how much of this is just getting cancelled or poor foresight in the story, but it's a little disappointing of an end to what is such a fan favorite series.
Much like Claymore, this series still holds a very special place in my heart and even though many of those same issues were still present, I still thoroughly enjoy Psyren every time I read it.
